At the Opening Ceremony of Central South University- DeepBlue AI Joint Research Institute & “AI+” Academicians Summit Forum on December 21, 2018, Professor CHEN Jie, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, president of Tongji University and member of the Expert Advisory Committee of Central South University- DeepBlue AI Joint Research Institute, made a keynote report themed by Some Scientific Problems and Disruptive Technologies in the Development of AI.

What is the new-generation AI?

In the report, academician CHEN Jie made an in-depth interpretation from several aspects including the background of AI, the new-generation AI, the distribution and coordination of AI unmanned systems, and the conception of the development of AI unmanned systems.

CHEN first pointed out in the report, “AI is the study on how humans generate intelligence, and how machines can react like people. It is composed of cognition, analysis, reasoning, decision-making and control, especially decision-making and control which are actually important parts for achieving effective control of the carrier and the process at the final end of AI. We cannot understand in a narrow sense that AI simply refers to some algorithms, but should use it in the systems.”

The new-generation AI issued by the State Council is programs based on five major technology applications. These programs directly target typical applications and serve breakthroughs of key technologies. AI has undergone three ups and three downs; and the fundamental problem is the origin problem and some key technologies. The breakthrough of key technologies and the forward-looking theoretical technology support are relatively lacking so that we also need face the fundamental problems for a long term. Next, only if AI can be used in industrial practice that it can achieve practical and real application.Subsequently, CHEN also aimed at his self-developed “Distributed System Operation of the Autonomous Unmanned System” to make an in-depth sharing with the audience.

What’s the direction of AI in the future?

After sharing his “Distributed System Operation of AI Systems”, CHEN finally presented some suggestions on development planning of AI systems: start from the perspectives of three major scientific problems including autonomous perception& understanding, integration of decision-making& control, and group awareness& collaborative control, to launch the research on nine directions, including metamaterial perception, multi-scale integration, quasi-natural computing, AI learning, biological-mechanical-electrical co-fusion, AI control, optimization& decision-making, group& collaboration, brain-like&bionic; focus the research on six core technologies including intelligent sensor, brain-like controller, unmanned terminal control system, network collaboration technology, intelligent chip& system, and security guarantee; thus to promote reform in seven major industries including intelligent manufacturing, intelligent transportation, intelligent agriculture, intelligent healthcare, intelligent city and national security.

In particular, academician CHEN Jie pointed out that the future development of AI should focus on the strengthening of original creativity, take key core technologies as the direction, and consolidate the foundation for the development of AI.The future development of AI systems urgently requires interdisciplinary integration and the cooperation among experts in various fields.

Background of the Event:

On December 21, 2018, the “AI+” Academicians Summit Forum& the Opening Ceremony of Central South University- DeepBlue AI Joint Research Institute, sponsored by Hunan Provincial Science& Technology Department, Industry and Information Technology Department of Hunan Province and Xiang jiang New Area of Hunan Province and presented by Central South University and DeepBlue Technology for boosting the construction of innovative province in Hunan, was grandly held in Central South University.Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering including WU Cheng, SUN Youxian, CHAI Tianyou, WANG Tianran, DING Rongjun, GUI Weihua, WU Jianping and CHEN Jie gathered at the foot ofthe Yuelu Mountain and developed communication on AI. On the morning of the same day, ZHOU Kechao, vice president of Central South University, and CHEN Haibo, chairman and CEO of DeepBlue Technology jointly unveiled the nameplate of the institute and awarded letters of appointment to the members of the First Expert Advisory Committee. The first meeting of the committee then was successfully held.Members of the First Expert Advisory Committee included several academicians of AI and related fields. At the summit, CHEN Jie, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and member of the Expert Advisory Committee of Central South University- DeepBlue AI Joint Research Institute, made a keynote report themed by Some Scientific Problems and Disruptive Technologies in the Development of AI.

CHEN Jie is the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, president of Tongji University, director of State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Control and Decision of Complex Systems,gainer of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, specially-appointed professor of Chang Jiang Scholars Program of Ministry of Education, academic leader of innovation group of National Natural Science Foundation of China, chief of Program 973, winner of New Century Million Talents Project, and National Excellent Worker. He is currently serving as a member of the Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council, a committee member of the Ministry of Education, the vice-president of Chinese Association of Automation, and the executive member of Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence. He has served as the chief editor and editorial board member of several international and domestic academic journals, conducted in-depth research in related fields of long-term control engineering, especially in the field of multi-objective optimization of complex systems in a dynamic environment, and multi-intelligent collaborative control. In recent years, he has won one second prize in China’s State Natural Science Award and two second prizes in National Award for Science and Technology Progress.
